Summit Lake - High in the Elkhorn Mountain Range is reached by a 2 mile hike from the Elkhorn Crest Trail. Summit Lake is full of brook trout which will give you a hookup rating of 90-95% for casts made. A float tube is not necessary to fish Summit Lake. It is said that "the 5 to 9 inch brook trout are there primarily to feed the 30+ inch Mackinaws" - lake trout. Brook trout feed at all times, lake trout feed late evenings and through the night both can be fished from the shoreline.

NOTES FROM BOB:

Dated 8/9/2005

I am planning to lead a group of interested fly fishers into Summit Lake on Aug. 20. Crawfish is a good alternate day trip if for some job related reason I cannot get off that day. What I would like is for everyone interested in going to e-Mail me or call me in the evening at home - 541-966-9335. I need to plan the transportation as the road is high-clearance 4X4 only. Anyone who has a 4X4 that would like to take it up there and has space for a passenger or two, please let me know. I am planning to meet at 0600 in Pendleton and go from there. We will all meet up again at Cracker Creek road near Sumpter then caravan from there. We usually arrive at the lake around 10 AM and fish until around 5 PM then head for the nearest food in Baker City. Everyone needs to pack a lunch and water. There is a good refill spring above the lake. You might pass some of the following information on to the folks.

Summit Lake sits at over 7,000 feet in the Elkhorn Mountains and is accessible by a steep four-wheel drive road and two miles of trail. The lake contains numerous Eastern Brook Trout from 8-10 inches and is fishable from most of the shoreline. No need to pack a tube, however, If you would like to, no problem.

Summit Lake brookies... all you can catch, all you can eat.
